Paris is so very beautiful that it satisfies something in you that is always hungry in America.
Andy Irons 1978-2010
It was a year ago yesterday that the surfing world lost one of its heroes, Andy Irons. Anna and I didn’t know the 3-time ASP World Champion, but we are friends with Andy’s wife Lyndie, and his brother Bruce. They are both wonderful people and Anna and I send them our warmest condolences on this sad anniversary.
This is a tribute video I created shortly after Andy’s death. The photos in the video were taken on the day of Andy’s wake at Hanalei Beach, which is just several miles down the road from where Anna and I live on the island of Kauai. Thousands of people turned up to pay their respects to Andy, and it was one of the most moving experiences imaginable in this tight-knit surfing community. Swarms of people paddled just offshore where they formed a huge human circle, and at its center the Irons family released Andy’s ashes into the same waters where he first learned to surf decades earlier.
Riding his big brothers surfboard and with the Hawaiian flag draped on his shoulders, Bruce rode a single wave to shore and into his mom’s embrace.
It was a day I’ll not soon forget. — Tom
Just Created a New Website

I’m a classic-car nut, and I tend to lean towards favoring classics which have not been modified and still look much as they did when they left the factory. In this vein, I’ve created a new website which showcases low-mileage, original classics. You can find it here: www.classiccarpurist.com

We Enjoyed

Bill Cunningham is a man who found something in life which he deeply loves doing, and decided to embrace it with everything he’s got. He’s kind, a bit odd, principled, dedicated, and resourceful. But mostly, he’s genuine.

I’ve never been a diehard fan of REM—its been more of a casual appreciation. In fact, Shiny Happy People has me always scrambling for the mute button. But, they have created some great tracks and I’d like to share with you one of my favorites, Find the River. —Tom
Hey now, little speedyhead,
The read on the speedometer says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve
Don’t be shy. Your just dessert
It’s only just light years to go
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon
I have got to leave to find my way
Watch the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes
Nothing is going my way
The ocean is the river’s goal,
A need to leave the water knows
We’re closer now than light years to go
I have got to find the river,
Bergamot and vetiver
Run through my head and fall away
Leave the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes
Nothing is going my way
There’s no one left to take the lead,
But I tell you and you can see
We’re closer now than light years to go
Pick up here and chase the ride
The river empties to the tide
Fall into the ocean
The river to the ocean goes,
A fortune for the undertow
None of this is going my way
There is nothing left to throw
Of ginger, lemon, indigo,
Coriander stem and rows of hay
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
Of river poet search naivete
Pick up here and chase the ride
The river empties to the tide
All of this is coming your way
